My experience is mainly with pointing dogs, but I have worked with some black labs in the field , and they turned out to be nice flushing dogs. I’m sure that with experience, your golden retriever will develop a nose to find birds-and could very well make a nice flushing dog. Don’t expect it to point birds, because it is not in the dogs breeding. Time and repetition will only benefit your dog. Recognize when your dog has picked up the birds scent. Shoot some birds over the dog and make it fun!

Any suggestions on how to make my golden retriever a little “birdier” or how to train her nose a little better? Or is this something that is mostly just bred into them?

I agree with popular usage among people that have them and train them they refer to them as just “pointer”and all the others with a prefix. Why would you cross them with Europeon dogs without expecting that it would mess some up as would happen in crossing two different breeds. Which they are. Respectfully Tomns

I agree they shod bee named “US pointer” thy are breed fore a long time a bit differently. God in each whey. In my opinion the mess up our blood when imported to Europe. If the where to different races ad have both.

Actually to call them “english pointers” is a bit of a misnomer they haven’t been engish for a long time and the tail sticking up is a not only stylish but a great aid in locating the dog in thick cover. Most people in the US have long dropped the ‘English’ from their name and call them just ‘Pointer’ (not AKC)They are the only pointer that has that distinction.

  9. glenbud says:

The vertical tail is strived for in the U.S. It represents stylishness and class and is a trait that is sought after when breeding. It is a sign of intensity and focus.

I am assuming the main difference between English pointers (UK) and english pointer (USA) is the tail. In these vids the tails are all vertical or over their backs, that is a negative trait on the uk breed, the tails should be level with their backs to accentuate the point!

i wonder if a doberman can be trained to become a good hunting/pointing dog. they are a lot smarter then gsp so one would assume they could learn but do they have the senses needed for the job
